Built in 1910 as the shared home of the Memphis Cotton and Merchants Exchanges, the Exchange Building rose nineteen stories over downtown, standing as the tallest building in the city for nearly two decades. On its trading floor, clerks on ladders chalked the day's prices across great blackboards while buyers called their bids for the Mid-South's "white gold."

Dressed in Tennessee marble and granite in the grand Beaux-Arts manner, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the landmark lives on as downtown residences, inside the very walls where the cotton capital of the world once did its business.
